Stop Skyrocketing 2025 Bellaire Rec Center Fees

Stop Skyrocketing 2025 Bellaire Rec Center Fees

The Issue

Dear Bellaire City Council and Community Members,

As long-time residents, we represent a diverse group of working professionals, business owners, retirees, and families who have made the Bellaire Recreation Center an integral part of our lives. From playing pickleball with participants as young as 10 and as old as 85 to forming friendships and supporting local events, the Rec Center fosters a strong sense of community. Losing this connection would be deeply disappointing. Unfortunately, the proposed fee increases for 2025 threaten to undermine this vital resource.

In August 2024, City Council approved a staggering 375% increase in Rec Center fees for residents—an astronomical hike introduced without proper evaluation of comparable facilities. These rates, if implemented, will place our Rec Center beyond the financial reach of many residents, especially those on fixed incomes. No one should be priced out of improving their physical and mental health or participating in the community. The proposed increases impact all who use the gym and weight room, compounding the burden on a diverse and loyal membership base.

Facility Concerns

Despite the fee increases, the state of the facilities remains a significant concern. The gym is outdated, with trash, debris, and cobwebs routinely left unaddressed despite repeated requests for cleaning. Members have even resorted to sweeping the dusty floors themselves to mitigate safety hazards. The gym floor, patched multiple times due to water damage, is in poor condition, and sagging nets are held up by binder clips provided by members.

The weight room is similarly underwhelming, offering cramped spaces, limited equipment, and inadequate room for stretching or floor exercises. Bellaire’s facilities fall short compared to nearby options, which raises the question: How can such significant rate increases be justified when the facilities fail to meet basic standards?

Pickleball Accessibility

For many of us, pickleball is a cornerstone of our Rec Center experience. However, access to the courts is limited, particularly for those who work during the day. Scheduling disruptions due to camps and the absence of evening hours for extended periods discourage membership. In the past year alone, the resident rate doubled while non-resident rates increased by 500%, driving many skilled players away and diminishing the quality of open play. The proposed 2025 increase, raising rates for couples from $80 to $300 (375%), continues this trend, sending a clear and unwelcome message to members.

The Need for Reconsideration

A local Rec Center should be a daily haven for mental and physical well-being, fostering community connections in a clean, safe, and affordable environment. The proposed rate hikes threaten to alienate loyal members at a time when new, professionally outfitted facilities are emerging as alternatives.

We urge the City Council to halt and reevaluate this hasty decision. Bellaire residents deserve a Rec Center that reflects their commitment to the community—not one that prices them out. The memories, relationships, and diversity we’ve cultivated here are invaluable. We believe in the power of community and respectfully ask you to reconsider the proposed fee structure.

Sincerely,

Bellaire Rec Center Members
