Poisoned fish trading in Kerala : Govt Writes to three states
The lab tests conducted by Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT), Kochi, on various species of fish brought from Thoothukudi, Mangalapuram and Panaji confirmed presence of chemicals on samples. Chemicals like formalin and ammonia were used to preserve fish brought in career vehicles without air-conditioning systems.
Food Safety Commissioner has also warned that the state government will take action according to section 30 of Food Safety Standard Act. State government wrote letters to government of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Goa asking them to take immediate measures to block transportation and trading of poisoned fish in Kerala markets from these states .
The volume of fish brought from Thoothukudi and Manglaore has been considerably increased recently after the state faced with decreased fish catch from its coast. The test samples were collected from Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi markets.
