Stop selling redtail catfish and pacu for low prices! Beginners buy, but they grow huge!

Stop selling redtail catfish and pacu for low prices! Beginners buy, but they grow huge!
The Issue
Many inexperienced fish keepers purchase redtail catfish (Phractocephalus hemioliopterus) and pacus (Colossoma macropomum) without understanding their care requirements. Sold at low prices and in small sizes, these fish are often mistaken for manageable aquarium species, leading to overcrowded tanks, improper care, and frequent abandonment once they outgrow home aquariums.
The Problem:
Massive Growth: Redtail catfish can exceed 4 feet in length, while pacus can reach 3 feet, making them unsuitable for most home aquariums.
Aggression and Tank Requirements: These species require massive tanks or ponds and can become aggressive, especially in confined spaces.
Welfare Concerns: Many end up suffering from stunted growth, inadequate care, or being dumped into local waterways, which can harm native ecosystems.
Environmental Risks: Released pacus and redtail catfish have become invasive in non-native waters, threatening local biodiversity, as they are already invasive in numerous places. If we don't stop, this could lead to them being banned.
Our Demands:
Increase Sale Prices: Implement higher pricing to discourage impulse purchases and reflect the true cost of their long-term care.
Mandatory Education: Require retailers to provide clear information on adult size, tank requirements, and care needs before purchase.
Regulated Sales: Restrict the sale of these species to experienced fish keepers or those with verified appropriate setups.
Ban on Impulse Sales: Stop selling redtail catfish and pacus in general pet stores that do not cater to advanced aquarists.
