Stop self‑serving politics: Voters must choose the Prime Minister
The Issue
🔥 Something has broken in our society and our democracy. People can feel it. 🔥
Political power now shifts without a single vote being cast.
Decisions that affect every one of us are made in rooms we will never see…
…and the public is simply expected to accept it.
That is not how a modern democracy should work.
Leaders can change without voters having ANY say
Right now in the UK, if the governing party swaps its leader mid‑Parliament, that person becomes Prime Minister automatically - without the public choosing them. Under current law, only the Prime Minister decides when to call a general election within a five‑year Parliament. There is no requirement to seek a public mandate after a leadership change.
In simple terms:
➡️ A Prime Minister can change… and voters have NO say whatsoever.
This feels distant.
It feels unfair.
It feels unaccountable.
And it has shattered public trust.
MPs can defect without facing their voters
When MPs switch parties or go independent, there’s no automatic by‑election.
People end up represented by someone they did not elect for that role.
This leaves communities feeling silenced and sidelined.
Party whips can punish MPs for representing US, the voters
Too often, MPs are pressured to vote with their party even when their constituents want something different. Whips can punish MPs for:
- speaking up
- asking questions
- doing the job voters sent them to do
When fear of party consequences outweighs loyalty to the public, democracy stops working.
No wonder people feel ignored. No wonder trust has collapsed.
This is not about political parties.
This is not about ideology.
This is about democratic dignity.
This is about whether voters still matter in Britain.
We need to fix this - NOW
We call on the UK Government to launch an urgent review and propose legislation to:
1️⃣ Require a general election when the Prime Minister changes
If a party chooses a new leader (and therefore a new PM), a general election must be held within 90 days or as soon as reasonably practicable - even if the party still holds a majority.
Every Prime Minister must have a public mandate. Always.
2️⃣ Trigger an automatic by‑election when an MP defects
If an MP leaves the party they were elected under, their constituents must get an immediate say.
No MP should be able to switch parties without returning to the voters who trusted them.
3️⃣ Protect MPs who vote for their communities
Introduce legal protections so MPs can vote according to their constituents’ needs without being threatened, punished, or silenced by party whips.
Democracy only works when MPs can speak freely.
Why this matters
Because democracy is not just a system - it is a promise.
A promise that power belongs to the people, not to party insiders.
A promise that our voices shape our future, not private deals behind closed doors.
A promise that when leaders change, we get a say.
Right now, that promise is being broken.
Other democracies already do better.
The UK should not lag behind.
We deserve a political system that is open, accountable, and genuinely responsive to the public - not one that shuts voters out of the most important decisions in the country.
We believe the public should ALWAYS have the final say - especially when power changes hands.
It’s time to modernise our democracy and put voters back in charge.
