The Issue

Living in the beautiful Sarasota County, I'm profoundly connected to the lush Florida environment and the diverse wildlife that makes this place special. As someone passionate about protecting our natural surroundings, it deeply concerns me that Sarasota County conducts aerial mosquito spraying—a method that poses significant risks to the environment and wildlife.

Aerial spraying disperses chemicals broadly, affecting not only mosquitoes but all insects, including pollinators like bees and butterflies. According to the Pesticide Action Network, these chemicals can wreak havoc on ecosystems, disrupting food chains and biodiversity. Moreover, wildlife, including birds and small mammals, may face harm if they come into contact with contaminated water or plants.

Human exposure to these chemicals is another serious concern. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns about potential health risks, including respiratory issues and skin irritations, which are heightened when spraying occurs near residential areas.

Alternative solutions exist. For instance, Sarasota County could invest in more environmentally-friendly mosquito control techniques such as larvicide applications in standing water or promoting natural mosquito predators like bats and dragonflies. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs that combine monitoring and control strategies can effectively manage mosquito populations without resorting to harmful chemicals.

Switching to these methods would not only be safer for our environment and health but would also protect the rich wildlife that thrives here. In a county known for its commitment to conservation and ecological beauty, embracing more sustainable practices showcases leadership in environmental stewardship.

Join me in urging Sarasota County officials to discontinue aerial mosquito spraying and pursue safer, sustainable alternatives. Our environment, our health, and our wildlife depend on it. Please sign this petition to enact change and preserve the beauty and integrity of Sarasota County for future generations.
