Stop Sarah Stockton's Unethical Hate Speech at Syracuse University

Stop Sarah Stockton's Unethical Hate Speech at Syracuse University
The Issue
As demonstrated in multiple large-scale studies, the suicide attempt rate for transgender and nonbinary people is around forty percent (Grant et al., 2011; James et al., 2016). The suicide rate for trans youth who desire but cannot access gender affirming medical care is higher than those who are receiving affirmative care (Budge, Adelson, & Howard, 2013; Abreu et al., 2022; Reisner et al., 2015; Robertson, 2015; Turban et al., 2020). Sarah Stockton speaks out against providing these life-saving treatments, which is unethical as a helping professional that should aim to do no harm. Her perspective is directly contributing to harm for the transgender community, including contributing to suicidality. Providing gender affirmative care is recommended by all reputable physical and mental health organizations including the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association, the American Psychological Association, and the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. These organizations endorse these treatments because of the robust research supporting their importance/necessity. Sarah Stockton disregards science in her perspective and there is no reputable research supporting her claims. Additionally, her perspective doesn’t include the voices of transgender people. Sarah Stockton claims that trans youth essentially don’t exist and they are a social contagion phenomenon. By invalidating the existence of transgender people, she is spreading hate speech. By hosting this speaker, Syracuse University is supporting the spread of hate speech. We request that this event is cancelled.
