Petition updateStop Russian Cyber War on Our CountryCanada G7 Meeting and Helsinki Summit Were Disastrous for the US

Indivisible Northeast Mississippi

Jul 24, 2018
It is now clear that the Russians interfered with our 2016 elections. This is a national emergency! With a reference to intelligence warnings prior to 9-11-2001, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats sounded the alarm prior to Trump’s summit with Putin in Helsinki: “The warning lights are blinking red again... Today, the digital infrastructure that serves this country is literally under attack.” For the sake of our democracy, we are demanding that our elected officials take aggressive action to:
- protect our democratic electoral process,
- support the Mueller investigation, and
- stop the President’s horrific actions to warmly embrace Russia while Putin treacherously attacks our country and uses Trump to weaken NATO and the European Union.
At the time of this release, 32 people and 3 businesses have been named in plea agreements or indictments as a direct result of the Mueller investigation. This includes 25 Russian nationals and 3 Russian businesses. There have been 6 guilty pleas from 5 defendants. Days after the latest round of Mueller indictments, Mariia Butina, the Russian gun enthusiast living in the US, was indicted by a federal grand jury as an agent of the Russian government. Her indictment clearly points to Russian collusion with American citizens.
We trust the warnings by Mr. Rod Rosenstein, Mr. Christopher Wray, and Mr. Dan Coats, who are all Republican-registered Trump appointees, that Russia is interfering in our elections. We have no faith in the word of Mr. Trump. According to the Washington Post, he made 3,251 false or misleading claims in the first 497 days of his presidency.
One only needs to look at the President’s appearance with Putin at Helsinki to know that he is acting in the interest of Russia and is failing to carry out his constitutional duties to defend our country from Russian aggression. How could Trump enthusiastically entertain Putin’s proposal to send Americans to Russia for interrogation. The American public, especially the members of Trump’s National Security staff and Congress, have no idea what deals he made in his one-on-one meeting with Putin in Helsinki.
With the exception of reports by the Senate Intelligence Committee, the Republican Party stands back with little sense of urgency; perhaps they are thinking they will again be benefactors of upcoming Russian attacks. The final full Majority report by the House Intelligence Committee released on April 27th concluded that there was no evidence of collusion with the Trump campaign. This report’s misleading conclusion attacking the merit of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrant to monitor Mr. Carter Page has been totally discredited by reviews of the publicly-released, redacted warrant released by the Justice Department in July 2018. Following Trump’s debacle in Helsinki, the Republican House majority refused to renew election security funding to protect our elections. This lack of action by Congress is no more than aiding and abetting the enemy. Our Congressional representatives need to heed the words of Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein: “When we confront foreign interference in American elections, it is important for us to avoid thinking politically as Republicans or Democrats and instead think patriotically as Americans.”
If we fail to stand united to maintain the order that the United States successfully built with our existing allies throughout the world since World War II, Trump’s actions and Congress’ inaction will likely lead to military conflict and disrupt world order. Specifically, Putin will likely use such acquiescence and appeasement as a signal to move troops into small European countries bordering Russia, including our allies Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
