Stop Roblox from collecting personal ID and photos

Stop Roblox from collecting personal ID and photos
The Issue
I was shocked and appalled when Roblox, a platform I’ve trusted for years, asked me to submit pictures of my face and my ID to verify my age. I am not alone, countless users like myself have had to go through this invasive process. It's daunting to think that a platform designed primarily for entertainment would require such personal information without offering enough privacy protection.
This widespread practice raises serious privacy concerns. Roblox, in its endeavor to comply with age verification standards, is collecting photos and personally identifiable information (PII) in a manner that feels intrusive and unnecessary. While it's understandable to prevent underage players from accessing inappropriate content, taking photos of users’ IDs and faces should not be the way forward, particularly when there's a backdrop of laws like the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) that aim to protect minors online.
COPPA is designed to ensure the safety and privacy of young users by requiring parental consent for data collection from children under 13. However, demanding ID images and facial recognition goes beyond what is required by COPPA, especially if the system does not assure foolproof security for this sensitive data. This kind of data collection could be misused or improperly handled, leading to potential breaches that expose individuals to risks like identity theft.
The solution to this problem is simple: Roblox should abolish its current practice of collecting ID and facial photographs and instead explore alternative methods of age verification that are both privacy-respectful and effective. For example, they can use AI-driven soft verification methods, parental verification codes, or implement stricter monitoring processes that don’t require intrusive data collection.
Join me in urging Roblox to revise its invasive and potentially non-compliant age verification process. Sign this petition to make our voices heard and push for a more secure and privacy-conscious approach that aligns with laws designed to protect us and our children.
