Stop Revenue-Raising Fines and Make Moorooduc Primary Safe

Stop Revenue-Raising Fines and Make Moorooduc Primary Safe
The issue
We, the parents and community of Moorooduc Primary School, call on the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council to immediately prioritise child safety over revenue raising.
Moorooduc Primary is a wonderful school. It’s a thriving, supportive community where children are encouraged to grow, learn, and thrive. Our teachers and staff go above and beyond, and families are proud to be part of such a nurturing environment. This school is at the heart of Moorooduc — it’s more than classrooms, it’s a hub for our whole community.
But while the school itself is a safe and positive place, the conditions outside the school gates have been neglected for far too long by Council. Families should not have to risk their safety simply to drop off or collect their children.
For years, families have endured unsafe and unacceptable conditions at pickup and drop-off:
- Cars speeding 80–100 km/h in a 40 zone, turning the school road into a racetrack.
- Grossly inadequate overflow parking across the road, forcing parents into unsafe and stressful situations just to collect their children.
- A Council more interested in issuing $200 parking fines to struggling families than addressing the real dangers.
- Despite repeated concerns raised since May 2024, the Council has failed to act.
- Enough is enough.
We demand that the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council:
- Withdraw unfair parking fines issued to parents at Moorooduc Primary School — including those backdated since 2014.
- Install a roundabout at the school entrance to improve traffic flow and safety.
- Install flashing school-zone lights and a supervised crossing operating daily from 2:30 pm.
- Conduct a full review into its reliance on school-zone parking fines for revenue.
- Our school deserves the same safety protections that other Peninsula schools already enjoy. The children, families, and staff of Moorooduc Primary should not be left behind.
Moorooduc Primary is a jewel in our community. For it to continue thriving, the Council must finally step up and do its part.
It should not take a tragedy for Council to act. We call on our elected representatives, community members, and the wider public to stand with us and demand urgent change.
Children’s safety must come first — not Council’s revenue.
