Confirmed! No age limit for filing a complaint of child sexual abuse under POCSO

Nov 21, 2018 —

Dear All,
Over the past two years your support has helped me raise awareness on this issue. Thanks to your support we have taken a big leap forward for survivors of child sexual abuse in India.

This October the Minister of Women and Child Development, Ms. Maneka Gandhi made a very significant announcement. After consultation with the Law Minister, she clarified that under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) 2012 there is no time limit to reporting of sexual offences committed against children. “Now any victim, at any age, can complain about the sexual abuse faced by him/her as a child” Ms. Maneka Gandhi said. http://www.pib.nic.in/PressReleseDetail.aspx?PRID=1549885

While this is a monumental change for the thousands of survivors who have been abused since the enactment of POCSO 2012, there is still no clarity for the millions of older survivors who suffered the same fate prior to 2012.

We still need to draw attention the extent of historical child sexual abuse. Research has shown that many child molesters target multiple children over time - if they can get away with their crimes once, they will keep going unless they are stopped. If older survivors can inform law enforcement officials about their experiences, then action can be taken before further offences against children are committed. This is one step in reducing the epidemic rates of child sexual abuse in India.

Your support has helped us get this far but we still have another step to go. So please share this petition: https://www.change.org/p/stop-repeat-offences-by-child-molesters-allow-adult-survivors-to-report-childhood-sexual-abuse with your friends and on social media.

Thank you for your support this far and I hope I can count on your continued support over the next few months.

Sincerely

Purnima
