As an Adjunct Professor at EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY (EMU), I was racially discriminated & retaliated against simply for doing my job! After 3 year of employment with EMU for the first time in three years an incompetent, volatile & unsafe student earned a failing grade in a course I was assigned to teach. Because this student was white & I was his Black Professor EMU sent out an additional white teacher (who, in her official statement claimed to be the students’ “Friend”) to work one on one with this student to ensure that my evaluation of this student would be overturned!

There is nothing in the guidelines, policies or procedures that states this is the course of action for a failing student. Not one Black student was offered this additional help (that I can find in the University’s guidelines or history). This was only done for a white student that was failing this course. The director sent in the students own personal friend to work with him for a total of three days in order to say that my evaluation was wrong & biased against this troubled student!

This white student & white faculty (friend) did everything in their power to tarnish my reputation & claim that everything I had documented for over 2 months was wrong & unfair. After which only the white faculty members’ statements were acknowledged & used to overturn the earned failing grade to then give this unsafe, incompetent & racist student a passing grade.

The semester prior several students were failed by white faculty members without question & without additional faculty being sent out to work one on one with these failing students. When I made statements about this issue I was retaliated against & no longer given courses to teach by this University. While they refuse to say I have been fired for legal reasons, I have not been rehired since the above events took place.

It is the schools policy to have a student that failed a course sit out until the situation is fairly resolved or the course (that was failed) is offered again the following year. Well that was not the case for this student! He was allowed to continue on as if he had indeed passed the course & the director of the program stated that because he did not agree with my assessment of this student he decided to over-ride the usual way things are handled in order to allow this student to continue on in his program like nothing happened!

I filed complaints that went nowhere! I wrote letters to the office of the president of EMU which were then forwarded to Human Resources. To date no action has taken place in my defense or to right the wrongs that I have experienced! Instead I receive the same aggressive & belittling emails that seem to have been issued by the university’s legal department.

When I ask for direct answers for the reason why I have been treated so poorly I receive legal jargon & attitude. The director dug up an old closed complaint to justify not offering me courses & once full documentation was given to her to clear up any & all concerns she went on to hire new faculty members & further fail to offer me courses!

I have copious amounts of documents, voice recordings & emails to prove everything that is stated above. I need this petition to go viral in order to begin boycotting this racist university!! I need all past & present faculty members and students that have experienced similar situations to come forward & stand with me to bring the racism I’ve witnessed & experienced to light!

Racism only thrives when the affected people do & say nothing! I will fight with every breath in me for every student that failed to receive one on one private instruction & every Professor of Color that was made to feel less than simply because you were not born White.

If we win this University will be forced to get rid of the racist people in power at EMU & create a more diverse EMU community, which is currently extremely/majority white!
