The Issue

In recent years, the spread of misinformation and disinformation has become a major issue facing countries around the world, and Jamaica is no exception. Individuals and groups using digital platforms to disseminate false or misleading information not only sow confusion and discord but also pose a threat to national unity.

This problem is exacerbated when such information is directed toward key figures in our government, including the Prime Minister and his family. The resulting climate of disrespect and hostility undermines respect for our government institutions and encourages a divisive political landscape. Opposition bloggers, in particular, have been active in spreading harmful narratives, and their actions threaten to destabilize the fabric of our society.

The government must take swift legal action to combat these malicious practices and hold accountable those responsible for spreading falsehoods. This is not merely an issue of politics—it impacts the integrity of our entire nation. By enforcing existing laws on misinformation and penalising those who intentionally spread deceitful information, Jamaica can begin to heal the divisions caused by these activities. Existing laws regarding defamation and cyber-crime should be actively enforced, and new legislation may be necessary to address these evolving challenges. A dedicated task force should be established to monitor and investigate cases of misinformation and disinformation, working alongside social media platforms to ensure rapid responses and corrections.

It is imperative that we stand up against the spread of dangerous falsehoods for the sake of our country's unity and future. Join us in calling upon the Government of Jamaica to take decisive action and prosecute those who engage in the dissemination of misinformation and disinformation. Sign this petition to protect our democracy and the well-being of our nation.
