The Issue

Tanyard  faces a threat that could compromise its environment and cherished heritage. A wastewater treatment plant is proposed to be built at Tanyard Rd. and Sharon Rd to accommodate 1200 future houses. This treatment plant would endanger the community and compromise the environment by significantly degrading the watershed and the quality of water in Peach Creek, increasing pollution in the area, and threatening the native wildlife.

This plant will support up to 1200 single family homes. The first phase of 400 homes starts winter 2026 and the second phase of 800 homes will begin in 2028. This plant will begin by discharging up to 100,000 gallons per day with phase one and increase up to 300,000 gallons per day. This discharge will contain e. coli, ammonia nitrogen, free available chlorine, total residual chlorine, total suspended solids, oil and grease, total iron, pH differences, and temperature differences.  We ask for a comprehensive environmental impact assessment and a transparent discussion with the community about the impact of these discharges.

Wastewater treatment plants have historically posed risks to local environments when not managed with utmost care. We already have data showing that this developer will degrade and jeopardize our creek. As it has another plant nearby discharging into McRae Creek. This plant has already had five violations in less than 18 months. Peach Creek is a spring fed perennial creek that supports a diverse ecosystem of wildlife, birds, fish, and aquatic or forest-dwelling mammals. Granting a permit for this proposed plant will threaten this wildlife. We worry about how this new development could potentially affect our land and water.  The region is home to diverse wildlife, some of which are protected, and the ecological balance will be disturbed by this new development.

Tanyard deserves a path of thoughtful growth. That’s growth which considers our environment, our community, and our future. Tanyard is not just a location on a map. We’re a close-knit community where families have lived for over 70 years.  We’re a community where generations have thrived, where our children attend local schools - the same schools in which our parents and grandparents graduated from - and where we find peace in the rural landscapes that surround us. It's the community we call home, and it's built on the values of trust, cooperation, and an appreciation for the natural world we live in. Help Tanyard stop this threat that could alter its cherished character and compromise the environment we hold dear.

We are concerned about the environmental impacts of this wastewater treatment plant.  While development is important, and progress is often necessary, this particular project raises significant concerns for us. Growth appears to be happening at a pace faster than our schools, infrastructure, and overall community can handle. More troubling, however, are the potential environmental impacts of this treatment plant.

We urge the local government and planning authorities to reconsider the placement and potential impact of this wastewater treatment plant. We ask for a comprehensive environmental impact assessment and a transparent discussion with the community about the findings. More sustainable and less intrusive alternatives must be explored to meet our sanitation needs. We believe in progress, but not at the cost of our environment or our way of life. Therefore, we call upon all residents, Montgomery County citizens, and friends of Tanyard to join us in this cause. Sign this petition to protect our land, our water, and our community for generations to come. Let us stand together for a greener, safer, and more sustainable Tanyard.
