Stop Profiting Off Teen Addiction: Tobacco Age 21 Now
The Issue
I've watched in disbelief as society continues to legally provide highly addictive, cancer-causing substances to young individuals barely out of high school. As an 18-year-old myself, I'm terrified to see my peers, the very people I grew up with, potentially fall prey to this poison, leaving them vulnerable to lifelong addiction and dire health consequences.
It's outrageous that cigarettes, which are a leading cause of preventable death worldwide, are easily accessible to those as young as eighteen. Smoking kills more than 8 million people globally every year and accounts for approximately 80% of lung cancer cases. Yet the minimum legal age to purchase this destructive product remains irresponsibly low, fostering new generations of smokers who may not fully grasp the long-term effects on their health and well being.
The scientific evidence is clear and overwhelming. Nicotine is a drug that profoundly affects the brain, especially for those whose neurological development is not yet complete. Researchers have consistently shown that delaying the age of first tobacco use reduces the risk of substantial addiction, as youthful and impulsive decisions can have lasting, irreversible impacts on mental and physical health.
Raising the legal purchasing age for tobacco to 21 years can be a powerful tool to protect young people. It can significantly decrease the rate of youth smoking initiation, help ensure the brain develops fully before exposure to nicotine, and ultimately reduce smoking-related disease and death rates. We've seen success in regions like California and Hawaii, where increasing the age to 21 has led to declines in smoking rates among young adults.
Let's end this madness and protect our youth from the destructive path of smoking. For the future of our generation and those to come, I urge you to raise the legal smoking age to 21 across all states and regions. This necessary change can save countless lives and allow young adults to enter adulthood with healthier minds and bodies, free from the chains of tobacco addiction.
Please join me in calling for lawmakers and community leaders to take action now. Sign the petition to demand a safer, healthier future for all.
