The Issue

Dear Mr Williams and the Trustees of Caerhays Estate,

We the undersigned respectfully request that you uphold local democracy, listen to the wishes of the community and do not put an ANPR car park on the beach head at West Portholland.

Over the last 4 years the public submitted over 200 objections to the Cornwall Council planning site regarding your plans to turn the beach head at West Portholland into an ANPR car park. Over 500 people signed a petition to get the Parish Council on board. We have over 300 people in our campaign group against the plans. The plans were rejected by both the local and wider community, the plans were rejected by the Parish, by the planning department and were rejected unanimously by Cornwall Council’s planning committee.

Nobody wants the beach head desecrated with infrastructure designed for busy city centre car parks that will completely change the look and feel of this rural spot. Set against the grade ll listed lime kiln these plans are an affront to Cornish and working class history. For the past 4 years this whole sorry business has caused upset and bad feeling. An ANPR car park is not the solution to any perceived issue at West Portholland. The site is unique, beautiful and unspoilt. It is respected and loved by many from near and far, they cherish it and look after it including filling holes, removing rubbish and taking away excess seaweed in the storms. It is nurtured and looked after by us and by local services funded by us, the tax payer despite it being land you own.

Please do not exclude this peaceful, caring community from this much needed local amenity by using a morally corrupt outfit that is designed to catch out even the most diligent of motorists. Please understand this exploitative form of Tarif collection has already turned hundreds of people away from this much loved bit of Cornish coast line which is as much ours as yours. This is unfair and morally wrong.

You have a duty as a steward of this place to look after it and to contribute to collective wellbeing yet these proposals do the opposite of that. They focus solely on extraction at all costs and are an affront to Cornish culture and the community. People will suffer and are suffering as a result. Please do not go ahead with these plans.
