We need your continued support to stop the City of Villa Rica's unjust and destructive road project that threatens to displace residents of a historic Black community. City officials are moving forward with these unpopular plans, disregarding the well-being and rights of the people they are supposed to represent.
Recent Developments:
- Protest March Announced: Join us on Friday, March 29th, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM at 103 Mirror Lake Parkway in Villa Rica to make our voices heard! We will stand in solidarity with the affected residents and demand the city halt its harmful plans.
- Unauthorized Actions and Disrespect: City officials have demonstrated a shocking disregard for property rights, committing land they didn't own without the consent of the residents. Furthermore, residents have reported instances of trespassing and ridicule by city representatives, highlighting a pattern of disrespect and pressure.
- Serious Health Impacts: The stress caused by the city's actions is taking a severe toll on the health of vulnerable residents. At least two residents have had heart attacks. We must stand up for their well-being.
- Cease and Desist Filed: The City keeps sending individuals on to private land within the Cleghorn-Anderson community without notice to residents. On March 6th, 2025, residents delivered a notarized cease and desist letter to the City Clerk, demanding the city stop sending people onto their land without permission. previous requests have been ignored.
- Threats Against Protestors: Back on December 10, 2024, a City Council member threatened lawsuits against any individual protesting the road project near his business and mentioning his name.
- Ethics Complaint Stalled: Following the unjust removal of a community advocate from that City Council meeting for speaking out against the council member's attempt to keep residents from exercising free speech rights, an ethics complaint was filed on January 6th. The City Council still has not established a board of ethics to review this complaint.
- Conflict of Interest Concerns: Adding to these concerns, there is a growing controversy over the proposed appointments for the ethics board. One council member is raising concerns about the Mayor appointing 2 out of 3 members and the lack of transparency in presenting the candidates' qualifications to the council for approval. Residents are worried that the Mayor's significant influence over this board represents a clear conflict of interest, as she is one of the subjects of the complaint the board would review.
- Dehumanizing Behavior: In a deeply disturbing incident, the Mayor’s husband made monkey noises at a City Council meeting, while sitting behind two Black residents who had just finished speaking. This blatant racism is unacceptable and underscores the urgent need for accountability and the lack of regard for this community.
We cannot allow this injustice to continue. The City of Villa Rica must be held accountable for their actions and their blatant disregard for this community.
