Stop Pets at Home from Selling Unfit Animals

The Issue

I bought my piggie on 10/6/2025 from the Pets at Home store in Hull. He was in the adoption section, but it turns out he was originally one of their own. I was reassured that he had been treated for illness and was healthy enough to be sold. Unfortunately, this was not the case. My piggie was still unwell and 2 days later he came out with a cough. After the vets then telling me he hadn't recovered properly and needed more antibiotics i was then hit with a £73 bill. At first i had to cover this bill but went straight back to Pets at Home who eventually covered the initial cost after pressure from me, this experience has opened my eyes to a much larger issue.

Sharing my experience online revealed I am far from alone. Many others have fallen victim to similar situations where unfit animals are sold to unsuspecting customers. It seems Pets at Home sadly has a reputation for such practices. This is heartbreaking and unfair—not just to us as pet lovers but to the animals who deserve healthier lives.

Statistics and testimonies from various customers highlight a pattern that cannot be ignored. The UK has stringent animal welfare laws, such as the Animal Welfare Act 2006, which mandates proper care for pets. Yet, reports indicate that in many cases, sick animals continue to be sold, causing emotional distress and financial burden on new pet owners.

To ensure all pets get a fair start at life, we must urge Pets at Home to cease selling animals until they can guarantee their health and well-being. This petition seeks not only to stop the sale of unhealthy animals but also to promote increased transparency in the pet sales industry. Implementing stricter health checks and offering detailed health records for all animals before sale must become standard practice to safeguard against these heartaches.

Let’s stand together to enact change and push for accountability from Pets at Home. Sign this petition to demand that they halt the sale of animals until they implement standards that truly look after the welfare of their pets. Together, we can make a difference for the future of all animals sold in stores.
