There is something afoot that nobody seems to know about at Prospect Park TENNIS CENTER.
You've probably seen the two big white Bubbles over the tennis courts for the winter season. The Prospect Park Alliance is now planning on covering the tennis courts with the big ugly white bubble YEAR ROUND!
This would potentially start in October 2025.
The major issues are:
1. The emotional impact - most tennis players look forward to being outside in the sunshine and feeling connected to nature and the park.
2. The aesthetic impact - it's a huge eyesore, it blocks the visual flow of the neighborhood, and blocks the Parade Grounds from the main park.
3. Environmental impact - they'll have to heat it in the winter and use air conditioning in the summer. This, at a time when the city is going to start fining co-ops and other buildings for not reducing their carbon footprint!
4. Concerns that this Public park will eventually become a private, for-pay tennis center that people are not going to be able to afford and enjoy.
For as long as I can remember, the tennis courts at Prospect Park have been a haven for tennis enthusiasts like myself. They have served as a vibrant community hub where players of all levels come together to enjoy the fresh air and natural beauty of Brooklyn, NY. However, the Prospect Park Alliance is planning something that threatens our cherished outdoor experience—a permanent structure over the tennis courts.
Part of what makes playing tennis here so special is the atmosphere. During the summer months, we thrive on the warmth of the sun and the breath of fresh air, elements vital to our outdoor-loving lifestyle. The installation of a permanent structure could strip away this unique ambiance, leaving us, essentially, stuck inside—and that's something many of us are against. We oppose this bubble that, under the guise of practicality, robs us of these beautiful moments and memories on the courts.
Moreover, this structure poses potential environmental concerns. Such constructions often contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, conflicting with our community's values of sustainability and ecological responsibility. We're committed to preserving the natural beauty and environmental integrity of Prospect Park for generations to come.
It's imperative that the Prospect Park Alliance listens to the voices of the local tennis community, valuing both our tradition and our quality of life.
Sign this petition to urge the Prospect Park Alliance to reconsider their plans and explore alternatives that preserve the spirit of tennis at Prospect Park, ensuring that the courts remain a place of community, health, and joy for all facing Brooklyn's beautiful elements.
