Stop penalizing disabled veterans: Fix the IU and SSDI credit issue
The Issue
When veterans like myself return from serving our country, we often carry not just the visible scars but also hidden wounds. Countless veterans are rated as 100% service-connected with Individual Unemployability (IU) by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). This ensures a lifeline of financial support to those unable to work due to their service injuries and illnesses. However, a cruel twist of bureaucracy punishes us further: the same support that keeps a roof over our heads makes us ineligible for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).
To qualify for SSDI, an individual must amass enough work credits, referred to as Date Last Insured (DLI). However, those of us deemed permanently and totally (P&T) disabled under IU cannot work without risking this vital VA benefit. Over time, as work credits expire, veterans find themselves ineligible for SSDI. This Catch-22 leaves us vulnerable to financial despair and pushes many to the brink of homelessness and poverty.
This system must be corrected. We propose an amendment to Title 42 of the Social Security Act to ensure that disabled veterans receiving VA benefits are not penalized and are given an equitable chance to secure SSDI. A simple amendment acknowledging IU as a barrier to work could seamlessly integrate with SSDI's credit system.
The impact of this change would be monumental. It would mean stability, dignity, and peace of mind for veterans who have sacrificed enormously. Current statistics reveal that over 40,000 veterans are homeless in the United States. Among them, many are caught in this web, unable to work yet unable to qualify for other necessary financial supports. Fixing this misalignment between veterans' benefits and SSDI would address a fundamental inequity and reduce homelessness and poverty among those who have given the most.
This issue is urgent. Veterans in our community and beyond are waiting for relief. We implore lawmakers, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Social Security Administration to hear our voices and take action now.
Please stand with us in demanding change. Sign this petition to support an amendment to Title 42 of the Social Security Act and stop penalizing disabled veterans. Together, we can ensure that no veteran has to choose between survival and slipping through the safety net.
