The Issue

Compassionate residents and animal lovers of San Diego have been disturbed to witness an ongoing event at the PB Shore Club that profits off of exploitation and animal cruelty. Every Wednesday night, the PB Shore Club hosts a spectacle that subjects goldfish to pain and suffering and even results in death; goldfish racing. These "races" place goldfish in a loud, stressful environment where patrons use straws to blow them through narrow & shallow gutters.

Goldfish are sentient beings whose small size and fragile bone structure make highly vulnerable to fatal trauma– studies have proven that they experience pain and demonstrate long-term memories (source: Walker, M.D., 2017, 'Pain in Fish', Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B). Goldfish experience pain and fear, goldfish form families, and goldfish definitely do not want to be the victim of drunk bar-goers cruel and lethal games.

Goldfish "racing" has been denounced by many animal rights organizations, including the Humane Society and PETA. Other bars in Washington and South Carolina who once profited off of this abuse have already dropped the practice.

It is time to bring a halt to weekly goldfish races at the PB Shore Club. This petition aims to protect these small beings, who deserve a life free from torment, threat, and exploitation, from weekly distress if they even survive the night. Your signature can make a significant difference in achieving a humane change for our local community. Please, sign and share this petition today. Your compassion makes waves of change.
