Stop open garbage dumping and burning in Kodathi
The Issue
I am deeply concerned about the ongoing practice of open garbage dumping and burning just behind Sri Balaji Orion Heights Apartment complex in Kodathi. This practice poses a serious threat to the health and well-being of all the nearby residents, including families with young children, elderly citizens, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
The open dumping and subsequent burning of waste result in the emission of toxic fumes and noxious odors, severely affecting the air quality in our area. Prolonged exposure to these pollutants can lead to respiratory issues, skin diseases, and other severe health problems. Moreover, the unsightly heaps of garbage attract rodents and insects, creating an additional health hazard.
It's alarming to witness the degradation of our neighborhood's environment, which was once a clean and peaceful place. According to a 2020 study by the World Health Organization, air pollution is responsible for millions of premature deaths worldwide. In India, air pollution is among the top causes of morbidity, accounting for over a million annual deaths.
We are calling upon the local authorities, including the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and relevant environmental agencies, to take immediate action to stop this hazardous practice. We urge them to implement proper waste management systems, including designated garbage collection points, regular waste pick-up schedules, and strict penalties for illegal dumping and burning
Additionally, public awareness campaigns should be initiated to educate the community about safe waste disposal practices and the importance of maintaining a clean environment.
