Growing up in Erwin, I've always cherished the unique charm and close-knit community that defines our town. As a parent and local business owner, the thought of a nuclear waste processing facility setting up shop just down the street from my favorite cafes, the daycare center my child attends, and the clinic I trust, deeply concerns me. It threatens not only the health and safety of our residents but also the very essence of what makes Erwin a wonderful place to live.

Energy Solutions' plan to bring a nuclear waste processing facility to Second Street—a key gateway property—is alarming. This area is surrounded by essential services and businesses, ranging from family-friendly restaurants and a bustling grocery store to a pharmacy that serves our community's needs. Importantly, it's an area not designed, nor zoned, for industrial use of this nature.

If this proposal goes forward, it could significantly reduce property values across downtown Erwin. Our local economy thrives on tourism, with visitors coming to experience the warm hospitality and unique charm of our small town. A nuclear facility in our midst could discourage tourists, potentially striking a damaging blow to the businesses and individuals who rely on tourism as a vital source of income.

Numerous studies have demonstrated that properties in proximity to nuclear facilities tend to depreciate in value due to perceived risks and stigmatization. Consider the adverse health risks associated with unexpected accidents or leaks, which pose a real threat to our children and grandchildren's well-being. The soundness of mind Erwin residents currently enjoy would be replaced with constant worry.
