Stop Normalizing Littering in Fiction: End the Habit of Flicking Cigarettes on the Ground
The Issue
In films and TV shows across all genres, there’s one recurring scene we’ve all seen a hundred times: a character smokes, finishes their cigarette — and flicks it on the ground.
This action is almost always portrayed casually, or even coolly — and often by protagonists or “good” characters. But while it might seem like a harmless detail, it sends the wrong message.
Cigarette butts are the most littered item in the world, polluting streets, parks, oceans, and harming wildlife. They take years to decompose and release toxic chemicals as they do. And yet, this destructive gesture is repeatedly normalized on screen.
Media has immense cultural influence. When audiences constantly see littering — especially from likable or aspirational characters — they unconsciously absorb the idea that it’s normal or even acceptable. This creates a dangerous disconnect between fiction and the real-world environmental impact of our actions.
We are not asking for censorship. We’re asking for awareness and responsibility.
🎬 What we ask from filmmakers, producers, and streaming platforms:
Please limit or avoid showing characters (especially protagonists or “good” figures) flicking cigarettes onto the ground.
Whenever possible, promote responsible behavior, such as putting cigarettes out in bins, ashtrays, or outdoor trash cans — which are common in real life.
Help de-romanticize a harmful act by treating it as it is: avoid glamorizing careless gestures that damage our planet.
If fiction can shape fashion trends and influence behaviors, it can also help normalize respect for public spaces and nature — without sacrificing storytelling.
🎥 A single second of screen time can either reinforce carelessness or model responsibility. Let’s choose the second option.
Sign this petition to call on entertainment leaders to stop glamorizing littering and help promote a culture of environmental awareness — one cigarette butt at a time.
