Forestry England’s recently announced plan to enforce car parking charges in its forest car parks is bad news for the area.

It would pose a significant barrier for residents on low incomes. People who rely on our beautiful forests for affordable recreation or mental well-being will find themselves disproportionately affected. And particularly, our community's volunteers, who spend countless hours picking litter and conserving the forest, now face additional costs to continue their generous work. Is this the thanks they get for their commitment to keeping these spaces pristine?

Consider, too, the dog walkers who visit these havens daily. They bring vitality and community spirit, yet under these new parking fees, even short visits may become burdensome or untenable. Moreover, the broader impact on our local economy, which heavily relies on visitors drawn to our natural landscapes, cannot be ignored.

With these parking charges, the very essence of accessibility for all is at risk. Our forests, meant for public enjoyment, could become exclusive experiences only accessible to those who can afford them.

Join me in asking Forestry England to reconsider and repeal these proposed parking charges. Let’s protect our forests' accessibility for everyone in the New Forest and ensure they remain welcoming and inclusive spaces.
