STOP Moms for Liberty from attacking NYC Public Schools
The Issue
Defense of Democracy supports our NYC teachers, parents, students, librarians, and other concerned community members in calling on the Bohemian Benevolent & Literary Association (BBLA) to cancel the Moms For Liberty event in their space on January 18th. Moms for Liberty is an anti-government extremist group as designated by the Southern Poverty Law Center, which reports on extremist groups.
Moms for Liberty grew out of opposition to COVID-19 health regulations, has quoted Hitler, called LGBTQ+ people "groomers," and serves as the driving force behind book bans across the country. They share close ties with the Proud Boys, a violent far-right street gang that perpetrated the January 6th insurrection. They’re now attempting to target our city.
Moms for Liberty does not care about "parental choice" and actively lies to the public about its goals. The group only exists to push a hateful, anti-LGBTQ and racist agenda that endangers families across New York and the United States.
BBLA – a cultural institution that receives city funding – should not host a group that works to stifle free expression and democracy by banning books and open discussion of issues they don’t like.
Condemnations and calls to cancel the event have so far been released by the following elected representatives: Congressmember Jerry Nadler, Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine, State Senator Liz Krueger, State Senator Brad Hoylman, Assembly Member Rebecca Seawright, Council Member Julie Menin, and Council Member Keith Powers.
Sign this petition and contact BBLA and their partners directly and tell them NYC will not tolerate hate groups.
Join us to rally and tell Moms for Liberty they are not welcome on Thursday, January 18th, at Bohemian National Hall (321 E 73rd St, New York, NY 10021) between 5:30 and 9:30 pm.
New York City is no place for hate!
