Stop Mental Health and Substance Use Service Budget Cuts
The Issue
Having walked the perilous path of addiction and emerged on the other side in sustained recovery, I have witnessed firsthand how crucial mental health and substance abuse services are. Many of my friends, who are also in recovery, rely on these essential services to maintain their wellbeing. Cutting funds from these vital programs not only jeopardizes our hard-won progress but risks the health and stability of countless others who are seeking help or sustained recovery.
Recent budget proposals suggest slashing funds from essential public health services, specifically targeting mental health and substance abuse programs. Even causing the potential elimination of SAMHSA, an organization that has fought so hard nationally for 31 years. These programs save lives. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), approximately 19.3 million adults battled a substance use disorder in 2019.
Funds from these programs are necessary for providing the support, counseling, and medical assistance that individuals need to regain control over their lives. Any cuts to these programs could have devastating impacts. They would result in fewer services being available to those in need and increased waiting times for the services that remain. At a time when mental health issues and substance use are on the rise due to unprecedented global stressors, reducing the capacity of these services can have a cascading effect, overwhelming emergency resources and negatively impacting public health.
Instead of cutting these critical funds, we should be finding more effective ways to allocate resources, improve service delivery, and ensure access for everyone who needs these programs. From community-based outreach programs to long-term treatment facilities, every aspect of these services are crucial for prevention and recovery.
Join me in urging policymakers to reconsider these proposed budget cuts. By signing this petition, you are advocating for the importance of mental health and substance use services and standing with millions who depend on them for survival and recovery. Let's ensure that these life-saving programs continue to support and empower individuals on their journey towards recovery.
