Yet another report, this time from the British Lung Foundation, has revealed that Londoners living in deprived communities are up to twice as likely to die of lung cancer, asthma and other lung diseases than people in wealthier areas, Sadiq Khan said today. Vowing to step up action to tackle toxic air in the capital, he said residents of Tower Hamlets, Barking and Dagenham, and Newham were significantly more likely to be casualties of lung diseases than those living just a few miles in more affluent districts. Clearly the issue goes way beyond the planned cruise terminal at Greenwich. But if we don't fight pollution on a local level how will decision makers like the planners at Greenwich Council be compelled to make decisions in our favour? They decided a terminal was good for business but apparently gave little thought to how it affected residents who live nearby, particularly on the other side other river in Tower Hamlets. An area already plagued with bad pollution, but also populated by people who don't vote for them! The contempt and disdain they gave those who spoke against the terminal at the public planning meeting on 21st July was clearly evident. Some of them were openly hostile. It was shocking. So please share this on social media and ask your friends and family to sign. You don't have to live nearby to appreciate the effects, particularly on vulnerable children. Their lungs are left underdeveloped - permanently - by age 8 or 9. And for some, with asthma, the effects are tragic. We can only hope Mr Khan is able to convince Greenwich Council that people’s health comes before wealth. Thank you.
