In 2003, Dutch Foreign Minister De Hoop Scheffer acted as a ventriloquist's dummy for the United States by spreading blatant lies about the Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussain. US Secretary of State Powell had just 'fooled the world' by giving a presentation to the UN Security Council in which he explained the rationale for a US-lead NATO invasion of Iraq. But the decision to invade Iraq had already been made befóre the presentation and the speech has become one of the Biggest Lies in Human History. Powell and De Hoop Scheffer repeatedly claimed that Iraq possessed Weapons of Mass Destruction and had direct ties to Islamic terrorist groups. Another key player was UK PM Blair who lied in Parliament that Iraq would be able to deploy Weapons of Mass Destruction within 45 minutes of an order. Ultimately, all these claims turned out to be complete lies, exploited by NATO for the illegal US-lead invasion in Iraq, aimed at stealing oil and territory. As a reward for his consistent lying De Hoop Scheffer was appointed the new Secretary General of NATO. And after NATO, he became a lobbyist for the defence industry.
In 2010 at Argos Radio, former director of the Dutch Military Intelligence and Security Service (MIVD), Van Reijn, revealed that De Hoop Scheffer had been aware of the criticism the intelligence services had voiced regarding the perceived threat from Iraq, as early as autumn 2002. De Hoop Scheffer claimed in the Volkskrant newspaper he couldn't remember, but Van Reijn stated that in Sept. 2002 his service's strong warning had already been sent to all ministers, including De Hoop Scheffer. Yet De Hoop Scheffer refused to attend a meeting between all parties involved, Oct. 2002. Also In other parts of the NATO alliance, security services expressed serious doubts about the NATO stories about Saddam Hussain's Weapons of Mass Destruction. But NATO ignored the security services.
Only a few months ago the Threat Assessment of State Actors 2025, a joint report by the AIVD (Dutch General Intelligence and Security Service) MIVD (Dutch Military Intelligence and Security Service) and the Dutch National Coordinator for Counter-terrorism and Security (NCTV) stated: “The likelihood of a direct military attack by Russia on NATO territory is UNLIKELY."
