2016/17, Mark Rutte was PM, current PM Dick Schoof was Head of Dutch Secret Service and the Netherlands was the scene of two training missions for the Ukrainian military intelligence service HUR. In Amsterdam and Rotterdam, the CIA and the AIVD (Dutch Secret Service) jointly trained dozens of talented young Ukrainian soldiers to become spies. Name of the operation: Goldfish. General Kondratjoek was at the basis of the close cooperation between the CIA and the Ukrainian HUR. The Americans saw potential in the HUR in particular, a rejuvenated service without a KGB past. Around the same time, a CIA intelligence officer and an AIVD employee met in Kyiv. They had common concerns: the future of Ukraine, the threat from Russia. Western European countries have just concluded a deal with Vladimir Putin about a new gas pipeline. 

A few meetings later, a concrete plan is in place: the AIVD and CIA are going to train Ukrainian spies together. In the Netherlands: Operation Goldfish The first training takes place in 2016. Young Ukrainian soldiers travel to Amsterdam on a business visa. Under a false name, they stay in hotels spread across the city. Trainers from the AIVD and CIA rent an apartment in Amsterdamvia Airbnb. the location serves as a classroom: Forget Amsterdam, you're in Moscow: how do you recruit a Russian? How do you stay out of the hands of the Russian intelligence service? Etc etc. The Ukrainians are given a crash course in intelligence and secret service work. In the end, all participants receive a diploma. A high-ranking American intelligence officer comes over especially for the presentation in an Amsterdam restaurant. The head of Operations of the AIVD is also present. 

A year later, the training is repeated in Rotterdam. The officers trained in the Netherlands form the backbone of the HUR in the years that follow. They are assigned leadership positions at one of the twelve secret bases on the Ukrainian-Russian border. American media previously revealed that the CIA largely financed these bases. When Russia invades Ukraine in 2022, the bases are transformed into mobile teams. From that moment on, they also undertake more sabotage actions in and around Russia; ...including the attack on the Nord Stream pipeline?!
