The Issue

Working people should not have to struggle to get a mortgage, the system is stacked against us

My struggle is the story of many. Despite working hard, owning a home—a fundamental aspect remains out of reach for too many of us. The difficulty starts with exorbitant deposit requirements, stretches across complicated banking procedures, and culminates in an overwhelming home-buying process. It is incredibly difficult earning a stable income yet being unable to own a home because the current system seems stacked against average people.

I have had to live in private rental homes and due to no fault of my own, been served with evictions notices due to landlords selling, 6 times I have had to move in 12 years, I work full time and all I would like is to be able to buy my own house.

My credit score is not great but although I can prove not missed rent payments in 10 years this does not help my situation and get turned away from banks who do not look at all the angles and information.

Added on top extortionate rents whilst trying to save which do not allow this to be a realistic option or plan for most.

Across the country, the median down payment cost for homes was 12.7% of the purchase price as of 2020, a significant increase from 7.1% in 2001, as per a report from Redfin. This has put homeownership out of reach for many potential first-time buyers and only exacerbated by the increasing complexities of the banking sector and home-buying procedures.

For homeownership to become more accessible, we need to rethink and reform our present system. Policies should alleviate the burdensome deposit requirements, simplify the banking processes, and make the overall home-buying process more transparent and easier to navigate with banks actually looking at you as a person and not a credit scoring system which is also very unfair and does not allow for past errors.

I am one of many who aspire to own a home and build a secure future. Let's come together to ask lawmakers and relevant authorities to cut through the complexity and challenges of the existing homeownership process and make it simpler and more accessible.
