The Issue

Living in Oakhurst, CA, my family and I see firsthand the potential devastation that the recent Madera County ordinance targeting Short Term Rentals could cause. Our family home and that of our extended family could be drastically impacted, not just emotionally but financially. This proposal threatens the livelihood of many members of our small, tight-knit community. For numerous residents, income from Short Term Rentals is crucial for financial stability and maintaining their homes.

Oakhurst is a vibrant town with considerable tourism appeal, serving as a gateway to Yosemite. Restricting Short Term Rentals could lead to more significant harm than the ordinance aims to resolve. Numerous community members rely on tourism-driven rental income to support their families, pay their mortgages, and contribute to the local economy. Forcing people to sell their homes due to lost income will lead to housing instability and potential depopulation, affecting businesses, schools, and services in the region.

The presented ordinance underestimates the critical role Short Term Rentals play in sustaining our community. Tourists not only rent homes, but they also patronize local businesses, creating a ripple effect of economic activity that bolsters business and family incomes. Curtailing this would disproportionately impact many, casting significant uncertainty over futures and possibly diminishing the charm Oakhurst offers visitors and residents alike.

We propose reconsideration of this ordinance with collaborative community discussions to assess better ways to address any concerns about Short Term Rentals. Solutions should aim at balancing neighborhood peace and quiet while respecting the economic necessities and rights of homeowners who depend on renting their properties. Implementing fair regulations rather than broad restrictions will more justly serve our residents' diverse needs and preserve the unique spirit of Oakhurst.

Join me in urging Madera County officials to reevaluate this ordinance in favor of a more balanced and equitable solution. Sign the petition to help protect our community’s economic health and vibrancy.
