The Issue

Hempstead Town Supervisor John Ferretti has urged the New York State Public Service Commission to reject Liberty Utilities’ proposed water rate hikes and protect Long Island ratepayers from another crushing increase in the cost of an essential service -- but he needs your help!

Liberty Utilities is seeking revenue increases of approximately 21.87% in Service Area 1 and 30.14% in Service Area 2. Service Area 1 includes south shore communities such as Lynbrook, East Rockaway, Baldwin, Island Park, Oceanside, and Malverne. Service Area 2 consists of the Merrick District – which includes areas of Merrick, Bellmore, Wantagh, and Seaford – and the Sea Cliff District. Customers in the Merrick District could see an increase of approximately 37% under the proposal.

Long Island families, seniors on fixed incomes, and small businesses are already facing rising costs. Water is a basic necessity, and these excessive increases would place another burden on residents who cannot simply choose another water provider.

Local public hearings are scheduled for November 18th at 12pm at the Merrick Library and 5 p.m. at the Lynbrook Library. Holding both hearings on a single day makes it difficult for working residents, parents, and caregivers to attend. Ratepayers deserve more opportunities to speak directly to the officials deciding how much they will pay.

We urge the Public Service Commission to:

  • Reject Liberty Utilities’ proposed rate hikes.
  • Schedule additional local hearings on multiple dates, including later evening hours.
  • Put affordability and the interests of ratepayers first.

Sign this petition to stand with Long Island ratepayers and demand affordable water.

Turn off the faucet on excessive rate hikes. Long Island is not your money tap!
