The Issue

Living in Belleville, Michigan has become a daily reminder of the environmental consequences that face our community. Just look at Willow Run – it looks like a blight on our landscape. The toxic ground is a reality we can visually confirm, even from satellite images above. Our beloved Belleville and Ford Lakes are nearing the brink of becoming unsafe for swimming. The evidence of this ongoing ripple effect can easily be traced over the last decade.

Now, we are at a critical juncture. State officials are toying with the idea of approving an application that would allow the local landfill in Van Buren to expand. This is not just any landfill. It's the one that stores nuclear waste brought in from other states, including hazardous materials from the World War II Manhattan Project. Instead of solving the problem, expansion will only worsen the situation.

Water runoff is already a significant problem. It threatens our lakes and continues to be affected by the growing population in our community. This expansion is not only reckless but diminishes the quality of life we've tirelessly worked to build.

A feasible solution is to impose a CAP on this landfill expansion. This measure will protect not only our environment but also the health and future of our local community. The expansion will serve other states at the expense of our own safety and well-being.

Let's act before it's too late. Sign this petition to urge state officials to reject the landfill expansion application. Let them know that the residents of Van Buren and surrounding areas want sustainable solutions and real protection against further environmental degradation.
