Stop knife crime in our schools/Security is needed
The Issue
Petition: Urgent Action to Combat Knife Crime in UK Schools
We, the undersigned, call upon the UK Government and the Education Minister to take immediate and decisive action to address the growing epidemic of knife crime in schools. The safety of our children is at risk, and it is imperative that the Government implements stronger measures to prevent weapons from entering school premises.
The Facts:
Sentencing statistics from the Ministry of Justice indicate that in the year ending March 2023, there were nearly 18,500 cautions and convictions for possession of a knife or offensive weapon.
Juveniles (aged 10 to 17) accounted for 17.3% of these cases.
According to ONS statistics published by The Independent, teenagers are far more likely to be killed by a knife or sharp instrument than other age groups.
There were 64 homicides where the victim was aged 13 to 19 years, with 80% of these deaths caused by a knife or sharp instrument—a rate significantly higher than in other age groups.
Recent Tragedy: The Failure of the Education System
Harvey Willgoose stabbed at All Saints RC, Sheffield.
This preventable tragedy highlights the urgent need for stricter policies to ensure the safety of students.
Our Demands:
We demand that the UK Government act NOW by implementing the following measures:
Mandatory Bag Checks and Metal Detectors/Airport type body scanners and bag scanners in All Schools
Similar to airport security and nightclub entry, all UK schools must conduct mandatory bag checks and install metal detectors to prevent weapons from entering school grounds.
Accountability for Parents of Weapon-Carrying Children
Parents must be held accountable for their children’s possession of weapons, ensuring that they take responsibility for preventing violent behavior.
Transparency and Immediate Action from Schools
Schools must be required to immediately inform parents of any violent threats or weapon-related incidents.
Strict policies must be implemented for handling students caught with weapons, ensuring they do not return without proper intervention.
Why This Matters
If we prioritize security measures for flights and nightclubs, why do we not afford the same level of protection for our children while they are at school? No parent should have to fear for their child’s life when dropping them off at the school gates. The Government must act NOW to ensure our children’s safety.
We urge everyone to sign this petition and demand that the UK Government implement these necessary protections before more innocent lives are lost.
