The Issue

In a recent online neighborhood chat, a city council member in Lakewood, California, revealed a deeply troubling practice that has been taking place under the cover of night. Contractors have been deployed to Lakewood Country Club golf course and other locations around Lakewood with the task of killing coyotes. It's shocking to learn that this isn't the first instance of such a cruel and inhumane approach.

Coyotes are an integral part of the local ecosystem and should be treated with respect. These intelligent, social animals form tight-knit family units whose disruption can have far-reaching implications. Scientific studies show that attempts to "thin" coyote populations can backfire, leading to increased territorial disputes and potentially causing younger coyotes to breed more, ultimately resulting in a larger number of pups. The current strategy is not only heartless but also counterproductive and ineffective in managing the coyote population.

There are humane alternatives available that prioritize coexistence and community safety. Utilising non-lethal methods such as hazing—using scare tactics to discourage coyote presence—and educating the public about secure waste management and pet supervision are proven ways to significantly reduce human-wildlife conflicts. Communities across the nation have successfully embraced these strategies, demonstrating that we can live alongside coyotes without resorting to unnecessary violence.

Given the complex social structures of coyotes, their presence benefits our environment by keeping the ecosystem balanced and controlling rodent populations naturally. Removing these animals through lethal means upsets this balance and dismisses our responsibility to seek ethical and effective cohabitation solutions.

We urge local authorities in Lakewood and Los Angeles County to immediately halt the lethal management of coyotes and adopt comprehensive, humane wildlife management policies. It is essential for the continued health of our ecosystems and the welfare of these creatures.

Sign this petition to demand an end to this cruel practice and advocate for a compassionate approach to wildlife management in our communities. Together, we can create a positive change for both humans and coyotes. Let us stand for coexistence and conservation.
