Stop Killing Cats at Apple Valley Animal Shelter! Fund TNR and help rescues help cats.

The Issue

Apple Valley Animal Shelter in Apple Valley California has a massive "euthanasia" problem.

The kill rate for cats specifically at AVAS is ATROCIOUS.

3469 cats cycled through AVAS in 2023.

Of that 2313 were "euthanized".

That’s a 67% kill rate.

-----

For January thru December 2023:

  • 60% euthanized
  • 6% adopted
  • .003% rescued  (only 12 the whole year)

Over 900 cats were killed between August and December 2023 alone, and not a single cat has been rescued since May 2023!!!!

Anywhere between 100-300 cats cycle through the shelter on a monthly basis. Yet from December 10th 2023 through January 31 2024 LESS THAN 25 cats have shown up on their website.

They don’t bother publicizing the rest. They don’t take photos of the cats to give rescues or adopters any opportunities. There are days when there are NO cats on their website.

Apple Valley needs reform. Most volunteer efforts currently exclusively focus on dogs when cats at AVAS suffer double the kill rate. We should be working together to improve policies for every animal at AVAS, but the cats especially need attention.

Trap Nueter Release (TNR) funding is CRITICAL to solving this problem. We request the city council to implement the TNR and low cost spay and neutering program as the approach of impounding and euthanizing feral cats has proven ineffective in reducing cat populations, with cats continuously trapped and impounded from the same areas.  The same trap and kill repeat year after year has proved to be just a waste of money.

We also need more transparency and more willingness to work with volunteers and rescue to publicize and pull cats for rescue.

Apple Valley Animal Shelter needs to do better for all of animals, particularly it's cats!
