The Issue

Make the right decision USF. Not having him at the ceremony and dinner? What are you ashamed of? If you are so proud, he should be there right?

MAKE THIS RIGHT. This does not make it just go away because he will not be present.

We, the undersigned, strongly oppose the induction of former USF coach Jim Leavitt into the Hall of Fame.

Jim Leavitt’s history is marked by serious misconduct that should disqualify him from receiving this honor. In 2009, Leavitt was accused of striking student-athlete Joel Miller, an incident that led to his termination from the University of South Florida. This was not just a lapse in judgment—it was a violation of the trust, safety, and integrity expected of any leader responsible for student-athletes.

Recently, Leavitt has again been arrested, reinforcing a troubling pattern of behavior. The Hall of Fame is meant to recognize individuals who have demonstrated excellence, leadership, and integrity both on and off the field. By inducting someone with this record of violence and misconduct, the institution sends the wrong message: that winning outweighs ethics, accountability, and the well-being of others.

We believe the Hall of Fame should represent the highest standards of character, not just athletic or coaching success. Allowing Jim Leavitt to be honored in this way would diminish the values the Hall claims to uphold.

We call on the Hall of Fame committee, the University of South Florida, and its governing bodies to immediately halt and revoke any plans for Jim Leavitt’s induction into the Hall of Fame. His past and recent actions make it clear he does not embody the character worthy of this honor.

This is not just about one coach—it’s about protecting student-athletes, holding leaders accountable, and ensuring that honors like the Hall of Fame reflect true integrity. We must send a clear message that violence and misconduct have no place in sports or education.
