Stop Insurance Greed: Fair Premiums for UK Drivers, Instructors and Small Businesses
The Issue
My name is Győző, and I am a professional driver and resident of the UK. Like many of you, I have watched in disbelief as my insurance premiums have skyrocketed year after year. As someone who relies on my vehicle for my livelihood, I have seen firsthand how the current system penalises hard work and professional experience.
I decided to start this petition because I am tired of being treated as a 'cash cow' by insurance companies. Whether you are a driving instructor, a taxi driver, a courier, or a regular commuter, we are all being hit by arbitrary price hikes that have nothing to do with how safely we drive, and everything to do with corporate profit.
Every driver in the UK is being held hostage by an insurance market that prioritises corporate profit over fair value. Because insurance is a legal requirement, we have no choice but to pay whatever prices are demanded – and those prices are skyrocketing without justification.
This is especially damaging for those of us who drive for a living. Driving instructors (ADIs), taxi drivers, and couriers are being charged "business premiums" that are often triple the standard rate, despite being the most experienced and qualified drivers on our roads.
Furthermore, the "Occupation Penalty" discriminates against everyone. Why should a chef or a nurse pay more than an office worker? In many European countries, like Hungary, insurance follows the vehicle, not the person’s job. It is a simpler, fairer, and cheaper system.
By signing this petition, you are demanding that the FCA and the UK Government stop insurers from profiteering and force them to provide transparent, fair, and non-discriminatory pricing for every citizen.
Relevant Facts & Why This Matters Now
The Statistics:
Record Increases: According to recent data from the ABI (Association of British Insurers), car insurance premiums in the UK have hit record highs, with some drivers seeing increases of over 25-50% in a single year, far outstripping inflation.
The "Occupation Tax": Research has shown that simply changing your job title on an insurance application—without changing your car, address, or driving history—can result in price differences of hundreds of pounds. This is a "statistical prejudice" that has no place in a fair society.
Professional Penalty: Professional drivers (ADIs, Taxis, Couriers) often pay 3 to 4 times more than the average driver. Despite having professional qualifications and, in the case of Driving Instructors, additional safety equipment like dual controls, the industry treats us as "high risk" to justify higher profit margins.
The Reality for Families and Businesses:
Insurance is not a luxury; it is a legal requirement. When the cost of insurance becomes unaffordable, it doesn't just hurt our pockets—it threatens our livelihoods.
Driving Instructors are forced to increase lesson prices, making it harder for young people to learn a vital life skill.
Taxi drivers and Couriers are seeing their daily earnings swallowed by insurance costs, during a national cost-of-living crisis.
Regular Commuters are being priced off the road, affecting their ability to get to work or care for their families.
Our Goal:
We are not asking for free insurance. We are asking for transparency and fairness. If the law forces us to buy a product, the government must ensure that the providers of that product cannot engage in arbitrary price-gouging based on what we do for a living.
