Stop Installing Bike Lane Rumble Strips on Hutchinson Island & the Treasure Coast!

The Issue

The Treasure Coast Rumble Strip Improvements Project has created dangerous cycling conditions within the bike lanes along 20 total miles of Highway A1A on Hutchinson Island between Normandy Beach on South Ocean Drive and the Pie Hole Restaurant in Ft. Pierce, and impacts the safety of our cycling community. The rumble strips create a bike crash hazard, and limit the area within the bike lanes for safe maneuvering. This Project is scheduled throughout Indian River County, Martin County, and St. Lucie County and is planned for completion in summer 2025. Due to the risks these rumble strips pose, concerned cyclists along the Treasure Coast have reached out to state and local government agencies for help with cessation of the Project, and to discuss safer options to include adjusting the rumble strip locations, and trimming vegetation to widen the bike lanes.  Since December 2024, local cyclists have met with the Florida Bicycle Association (the largest cycling advocacy group in Florida), and communicated with state and local Department of Transportation representatives, the District 4 safety representatives, local bike attorneys, and WPTV local news to highlight the unsafe conditions the rumble strips have caused, and to seek a resolution. The scope of the Rumble Strip Project can be found on the Florida Department of Transportation's website here: https://www.d4fdot.com/tcfdot/pdf/News_Releases/09-01-24/TC%20Rumble%20Strips_ProjectInformationFlyer.pdf
