It was certainly disappointing that yet another Anzac Dawn Service at the Australian War Memorial was dominated by Christianity last week.
But we’re heartened that more veterans are speaking out about how the religious nature of Dawn Services is alienating for them.
In Crikey during the lead-up to Anzac Day last week, one veteran asked: “Why is the non-Christian majority required to participate in religious tradition in order to pay their respects to the Anzacs?”
In The Guardian on Anzac Day, columnist Paul Daley wrote: “An abundance of Christianity in Anzac Day services stands to emotionally and culturally isolate more and more people.”
As we reported last week, Christian acts of worship again dominated the Dawn Service at the Australian War Memorial and in some other capital cities. Watch this video on YouTube to see some of the religious elements.
Thanks for your support. We’ll continue to advocate for change. If you are a veteran who is interested in supporting this effort further, please contact me via email: sigladman@rationalist.com.au
