Stop illegal scrapyards in Despatch
The Issue
Dear Despatch and surrounding communities, especially Ward 41 & Ward 52.
This cause is deeply personal to us as the SACP because we care about our community, our families, and the safety of our children. We deserve to live in a neighbourhood where people feel safe in their homes and where our infrastructure and livelihoods are protected. We cannot sit back and watch crime affect our community while stolen cables, metals, and other property are traded unlawfully. We believe that by standing together and taking action, we can make a significant difference.
Illegal scrapyards and the illicit trade of scrap metal are not just a nuisance; they pose real and immediate threats to our safety and the well-being of our community. These operations facilitate the trade of stolen property, often including crucial infrastructure components like cables and metals. This activity endangers our community by encouraging theft and degrading our public services, leading to disruptions that affect each one of us daily.
According to the South African Chamber of Commerce, cable theft alone costs the country billions annually, with local municipalities experiencing power outages and service disruptions as a direct consequence. These legal violations don't just disrupt our lives; they also strain our law enforcement resources and create an environment that is ripe for further criminal activity.
By signing this petition, we are sending a strong message to local authorities, urging them to take immediate and decisive action. We call for increased monitoring and regulation of scrap metal trading, and for authorities to implement stricter penalties for those caught participating in these illegal activities. Together, we can press for the empowerment of our local law enforcement to identify and shut down these operations.
Additionally, we encourage the promotion of community awareness programs to educate residents on recognizing and reporting illegal scrapyard operations. Public cooperation is an essential component in eradicating these networks from within our community.
Let's stand united to protect our neighbourhood from crime and ensure a safe environment for our children. We all have a part to play in safeguarding our community. Sign this petition and be the voice for Despatch safe and secure future.
