Stop IDBI Bank Privatization: Save 19,000+ Government Jobs and the Future of Our Youth

The privatization of IDBI Bank puts the jobs and families of over 19,000 current employees at risk. Many young people are studying hard for government exams, and this sale takes away their chance before they even get to try. For future generations, these secure government jobs will simply no longer exist. This must be stopped.

Respected Sir/Madam,

I sincerely request your support in opposing the proposed privatization of IDBI Bank and protecting the interests, livelihoods, and future of thousands of employees and their families.

Employee Trust and Uncertainty:

Thousands of employees joined IDBI Bank with the belief that they were becoming part of a government-backed institution. They made important career decisions based on this trust. Now, this privatization is creating massive uncertainty in the minds of employees regarding their job security, service conditions, and future prospects.

Threat to Youth and Future Generations:

This deal will severely damage the employment environment in the country. In the era of digitalization, recruitment in public sector banks is already declining. In such a scenario, permanently wiping out over 19,000 secure public-sector jobs is a huge blow to the youth. The government is shrinking the pool of secure government jobs, depriving future generations of a secure future.

Short-Term Gain vs. Long-Term Loss:

The government is selling the bank for ₹52,878 crore, while the bank is earning an annual profit of ₹9,513 crore. This simply means that within just 5 to 6 years, the bank can recover this entire sale amount through its internal earnings. Selling a profitable asset, which could have filled the nation's treasury for decades to come, is an extremely imprudent economic decision.

Disregard for Parliamentary Promise:

In 2003, when the government led by former Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee converted IDBI (which was previously a financial institution) into a full-fledged commercial bank, a clear parliamentary commitment was made, and a government guarantee was given in Parliament that the government's stake would remain at least 51%. Breaking that historic promise not only raises questions about the government's intent but also weakens public trust in the country's financial policies.

Suggestion for the Government:

Instead of privatizing the bank, the government should consider increasing its stake and retaining at least 51% ownership, so that IDBI Bank remains under government control.

Our Demands:

  • Complete Halt on Privatization: IDBI Bank should not be privatized, and the process of selling the bank to Fairfax must be stopped immediately.
  • Honor the 2003 Parliamentary Promise: The government must retain at least a 51% stake, as assured to Parliament in 2003.
  • Government Employment Opportunities for Youth: The bank must retain its Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) status, ensuring that government job opportunities remain available for youth in the coming years.
  • Protection of Employees' Rights: The bank should remain under government control, and the service conditions, pensions, and reservation policies of all existing employees must remain fully protected as before.

Conclusion:

IDBI Bank is not just an organization; it is the foundation of thousands of families' livelihoods. I sincerely hope you will take this matter seriously. I earnestly appeal to you to stand with the employees of IDBI Bank to stop this privatization and extend your full support to our collective effort. Thank you very much for your understanding and cooperation.

Yours sincerely,
An IDBI Bank Employee
