The Letter:
Attention Prime Minister, Premiers and Decision Makers
Any horse in Canada can be killed for meat - victims include foals, pregnant mares, first ponies and the old mares who let every horse-crazy kid pat them. They, along with the injured sports horses, ponies that children have outgrown, and gentle giants like Belgiums and Clydesdales, are all among the terrified animals being shipped off to slaughter in Canada and abroad. Horses helped build this country. They have served along side us in times of war. They trust us and we, in return for their service, pack them into trucks and ship them to slaughter - locally or overseas where we have no laws to oversee their treatment or death.
Horses are flight animals, so from a humane perspective, confining horses and transporting them is reprehensible. They can be injured in the transport to the sales yards and slaughterhouse - this is a terrifying experience for them. When transported these horses are without food or water, and when they are shipped overseas this means up to 40 hours from original feed lot, to quarantine location in Japan.
And finally, from an environmental perspective shipping horses overseas is ludicrous. We are in severe climate crisis. We are using one of the world's largest airplanes to ship horses live to slaughter in a foreign country. Refueling in Alaska, not to water and feed the horses, but to fuel the plane due to the extreme weight of the cargo.
The Liberal government said at the last TWO federal election they will end the live export of horses - but they have failed to keep their promises. So we are raising our voices for the voiceless.
The majority of Canadians do not believe that horses should be slaughtered (see 1 below). There are humane options for horses and other equines who humans consider beyond use. These include pastured retirement and, for those without a future, on farm vet administered euthanasia and deadstock removal (or on farm burials). And there are ways for governments to fund compassionate end of life care for equines including registration of foals at birth with a portion of that fee being held in a fund that is then used to subsidize on farm vet administered euthanasia and deadstock removal (or on farm burials).
We, the signatories of this petition, want this industry shut down.
Sincerely
