Thank you to everyone for your continued support. Our petition opposing the Shining Hill high-rise development in Newmarket has now reached nearly 1,000 signatures, and the number continues to grow each day.

Recent Updates to the Development Plan
Shining Hill, the developer, recently submitted an updated plan to the Town of Newmarket on October 27, 2025. There are several significant changes and updates to the development plans. According to a recent blog by the Newmarket Ward 6 Councillor, many of these changes and their origins are outlined in more details.

In the latest version of the plan, the previous proposal for “high-rises” has been removed and replaced with “mid-rises” that will be up to eight stories tall. Additionally, the originally proposed density of up to 3,000 units has been reduced by about half. These updates are positive steps forward, but your ongoing support and engagement are now more crucial than ever.

Your participation remains vital at this stage. The updated development plan is not yet finalized; a portion of the Shining Hill development is still labeled as “future development,” with no further details provided. There is still uncertainty about whether high-rise buildings could be included in future phases, which could potentially increase the density back to the earlier level of 3,000 units. Since no specific information is available yet, your continued support and involvement are essential.

How You Can Make Your Voice Heard

Attend the upcoming Public Meeting: A required public meeting regarding the new plan will take place on Monday, December 1, 2025, at 1:00 PM at the Town offices (395 Mulock Drive, Newmarket). You can attend in person or watch the live stream online at www.newmarket.ca/meetings

Participate in the Casual Drop-In Event: Prior to the public meeting, there will be a casual drop-in event on Thursday, November 27, 2025, from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM at the same Town offices. This is an opportunity to review materials and speak directly with Newmarket planning staff about the Shining Hill development.
