Stop Government Shutdowns — Protect the People, Not the Politicians Petition to: The United States Congress and President of the United States Every time the government shuts down, millions of Americans pay the price — while the people responsible for the gridlock continue to collect their paychecks. Essential services like food assistance, veterans’ benefits, national parks, and federal paychecks are disrupted, leaving hardworking citizens caught in political crossfire. This is unfair, irresponsible, and un-American. We, the undersigned, demand the following reforms:       1.  Essential programs must stay funded Services that protect citizens’ health, safety, and livelihoods must continue regardless of political disputes.       2. No work, no pay for lawmakers. If the government shuts down, all members of Congress, their staff, and senior federal officials should lose pay and benefits for every day the government isn’t fully open.

The people who cause the shutdown should feel the consequences — not the citizens they represent. It’s time to hold our leaders accountable. We should never again face a government shutdown that punishes everyday Americans while politicians play partisan games.
