Last year, almost a thousand Iowans signed this petition because they were concerned about state overreach, constitutional limits, and interference in local law enforcement decisions. People came together from across the political spectrum around a shared principle: local communities should not be strong-armed by the state. That issue has returned.

A new bill at the Iowa Capitol, SF 2097 (with House companion HF 2041), would require local police and sheriffs across Iowa to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement whenever requested. The change is subtle in wording but significant in effect — shifting discretion away from local departments and into a statewide mandate, without funding and without protections for local governments.

This is not about immigration policy itself. It is about who decides how local law enforcement is used — local communities, or Des Moines.

To keep information and public response focused, a new petition has been created that lays out what this bill does, why people are concerned, and who is making the decision.

If you supported the effort last year because you care about constitutional boundaries, local control, or community trust, this is the next place where those same principles are at stake.

Thank you for staying engaged.
