Stop Government Funding of Biased Media Houses in India

The Issue

India’s democracy depends on a free, independent and fearless media that questions those in power and informs citizens honestly.

Over the past decade, many Indians have observed a troubling trend: several media houses appear to have become mouthpieces for the ruling government, amplifying its narratives while ignoring failures, policy mistakes, and legitimate criticism from opposition and civil society.

One major reason is the huge flow of government advertisements, contracts, and financial deals worth crores of rupees given to select media houses using public money. When media organizations become financially dependent on the government, their ability to remain independent is compromised.

Public funds must never be used to influence journalism or promote political propaganda.

Therefore, we demand a clear and enforceable rule:

No government — present or future — should be allowed to provide advertisements, contracts, or financial incentives to media houses that demonstrate political bias or function as propaganda platforms.

Government advertising should be distributed through transparent, independent, and non-political mechanisms that ensure fairness and protect journalistic independence.

India deserves a media that serves the public, not political power.
