STOP GOGUARDIAN!!!

The Issue

Students in Fort Bend Independent School District (FBISD) in Houston, Texas are facing an unprecedented invasion of privacy through the use of the GoGuardian software. GoGuardian, a tool designed to monitor students' digital activities on school-issued devices, has raised significant concerns regarding students' privacy rights and their free expression.

This surveillance tool is implemented under the guise of ensuring safety and maintaining focus on academics, but it crosses a line by giving administrators the ability to track students' online activities excessively. Reports indicate that GoGuardian not only monitors internet browsing but also tracks keystrokes and locations, essentially turning school laptops into surveillance devices.

The Constitution of the United States, through the Fourth Amendment, protects citizens, including students, from unreasonable searches and seizures. The excessive monitoring by GoGuardian can be construed as such, thus infringing on students' rights. Moreover, the chilling effect this kind of surveillance has on freedom of expression is profound. Students deserve the freedom to explore, learn, and communicate without fearing constant oversight.

FBISD should trust its students and faculty to maintain a responsible online presence without such invasive oversight. Schools are encouraged to provide education on digital citizenship and responsible internet use as proactive measures, instead of resorting to intrusive monitoring. Implementing programs that emphasize trust, education, and open communication can be far more effective in achieving educational goals without compromising privacy.

We urge the school district and its leaders to reconsider the use of GoGuardian and to respect students' rights to privacy and freedom. By investing in supportive and non-invasive educational solutions, FBISD can create a more conducive environment for both learning and personal growth.

Please sign this petition to demand the Fort Bend Independent School District stop using GoGuardian in its schools and develop alternatives that respect student privacy rights while ensuring a safe learning environment. Your support is crucial in championing for a better balance between security and personal freedoms in our schools.
