Stop Georgia Lawmakers From Making Families Pay for Data Center Expansion
The Issue
Georgia families should not have to bankroll the data center boom.
Our power bills should not leave us responsible for the costs of someone else's expansion. Our water and neighborhoods deserve protection, too.
We're calling on the Georgia General Assembly to pass a statewide moratorium on new data center approvals in the 2027 legislative session. Keep that pause in place until lawmakers enact enforceable protections for household bills, water resources, and local communities.
The scale of this buildout demands accountability. In December 2025, Georgia regulators approved nearly 10,000 megawatts of additional power capacity for Georgia Power, primarily to serve large new customers such as data centers.
The Public Service Commission says signed customers now cover that expansion, and it has strengthened customer protections, including a financial backstop through 2031. Those steps matter. We want lawmakers to build on them with protections that last for the full life of these projects.
For a household with no room in its budget, every extra dollar on an electric bill means less for groceries, rent, or medicine. Families should not bear the financial risk of projects they do not own.
In 2026, proposals to pause data center development and strengthen protections against data center power costs failed to become law. The next session must deliver more than another debate.
Before the pause is lifted, lawmakers must:
Protect household bills. Require data center companies to cover the full costs they create, with enforceable financial guarantees if projects shrink, close, or fail.
Protect water and neighborhoods. Require public water-use disclosures, independent impact reviews, and enforceable safeguards against excessive water consumption and noise.
Give communities a meaningful say. Require early public notice and accessible hearings before new projects receive approval.
A pause is not a permanent ban. It's a chance to put protections in place before approving more projects.
Sign now, before lawmakers return in January, to demand a statewide pause in the 2027 session. Share this petition with your neighbors and send Georgia's leaders a clear message: protect families first—then decide what gets built.
