The Issue

Children across India are facing silent discrimination in schools because of their food choices. Recently, at Global Indian International School (GIIS), Ahmedabad, a 5-year-old child was isolated daily simply for bringing eggs in his lunchbox.

Reddit Post

Despite the school confirming that both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food was allowed, a teacher forced the child to sit alone, labeling his food as “unhealthy.” The child was emotionally distressed and begged his parents not to send eggs anymore—just to avoid being punished.

This isn’t an isolated incident. Across India, unspoken food biases are enforced in schools, subjecting children to social exclusion, mental distress, and humiliation—all based on personal prejudices, not official rules.

If we do nothing, more children will suffer psychological harm, feeling ashamed of their food, culture, and identity. Schools are supposed to be safe spaces for learning, yet food-based discrimination is turning them into places of exclusion and fear.

We must act now to:
Enforce clear, written food policies in all schools. No more hidden biases.
Ban food-based discrimination & isolation by teachers and staff.
Hold schools accountable for unfair, unofficial restrictions.

If these changes happen, every child—regardless of dietary habits—will feel safe, respected, and included in their school environment. And, having a clear policy will also make it easier for the parents to decide which school to choose.

This issue is widespread, but rarely spoken about. Schools are quietly enforcing food apartheid, making children feel like outcasts just because of their lunch.

This must stop now. We urge the Government of India, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), and the Ministry of Education to take immediate action to ensure that:
All schools have transparent food policies at the time of admission.
No child is isolated or discriminated against for bringing non-veg or specific foods.
Strict action is taken against schools and teachers who violate these guidelines.

Food should not divide children. Schools must foster inclusion, respect, and diversity—not discrimination.
